Eye problems like refractive errors are troublesome and could affect your everyday life. With normal vision, the focusing system of the eye — the cornea and the lens — is responsible for supporting the incoming light rays on the retina’s surface. Imagine adjusting the lens of a DSLR camera.

Refractive errors take place when the cornea and lens don’t match the length of the eye and subject it wants to bring into focus, resulting in a blurry image at certain locations. Fortunately, there are ways to help improve your vision, like undergoing LASIK eye surgery.

What is LASIK Eye Surgery?

Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK), more commonly known as laser eye surgery, is an outpatient procedure specifically for correcting refractive errors. Eye surgeons remove a thin corneal tissue flap, then smoothen and reshape the cornea bed to correct the error. You’ll receive one of the following procedures depending on your condition:

  • Traditional LASIK
  • Wavefront LASIK
  • Trans Epithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy
  • Wavefront Trans Epithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy
What Types of Refractive Errors Can LASIK Treat?
  • Nearsightedness (Myopia) – Those who suffer from this condition have difficulties seeing distant objects yet they’re okay when looking at objects that are closer. This happens when the cornea has too much curvature or when the eyeballs are too long, affecting the light that enters the eye.
  • Farsightedness (Hyperopia) – People who have this condition find it difficult to focus on nearby objects, like reading a book. They have either a short eye or an abnormally flat cornea. This takes place when the light that enters the eye doesn’t go directly, but focuses behind the retina.
  • Astigmatism – In this situation, either the lens shape or the cornea is causing a distortion. You see multiple images on the retina, making your vision blurry at any distance. There are cases when you can have a combination of astigmatism and myopia or hyperopia.

If you want to improve your vision, then LASIK eye surgery is the way to go. Be informed and know more about this procedure before visiting an eye surgeon.
